Creative Start-Ups Guide

Starting a business with no experience can be very daunting.  People around you may doubt your ability, your choices and your ideas, particularly if all your energy has been focussed on creating ideas and you’re unfamiliar with business language and processes.

However, when creating and inventing your ideas you take risks, problem-solve and make ideas happen, and this is what business is really about.

The Creative Start-Ups Guide aims to help you take your idea and develop it into a successful business, using the skills you already have.

The tools in this guide were developed for NESTA's Creative Pioneers' Academy, and Insight Out and Starter for 6 programmes.  These programmes are aimed at design graduates, individuals from creative industries, biotechnology research students, and innovators from all sectors wanting to start a business.

Topics covered in this guide consider:

Values: Incorporating your personal values in your business is crucial to its success. Getting it right will be what makes the difference between your business and the competition.

Evidence Modelling: Envisage what your business will look like when it is up and running.  This is an invaluable tool to help you understand what you can do to make your business vision into reality, and where you need to make adjustments to your plans.

Blueprint Modelling: Visualise how your business will operate by mapping out all the steps to deliver your product or service. You can do this by creating a detailed flow chart; covering idea generation through realisation to distribution.

Relationship Modelling: Enables you to understand your own skills and areas where you need more support. It also determines the business relationships you need, to make your idea succeed.

Consequence Modelling: Discover the financial implications that business relationships and your values have on your business, so you can make any necessary adjustments.
