Designing for Transition

Designing for Transition (DefT) is an independent initiative aimed at not-for-profit or ‘mission-led’ organisations in the arts, heritage and cultural sector across the UK.

DefT aims to stimulate innovative approaches to help organisations, funders and investors improve their support for the creation and experience of art. The initiative builds on findings from an earlier three-year research campaign – Mission, Models, Money (MMM), which identified key factors that inhibited performance in the sector.

DefT is primarily based on two of these factors:

  • poor levels of knowledge and skills in core competency areas
  • misalignment of funding and infrastructure support systems

Evidence from the action research showed that these factors are limiting the ability of organisations to adapt to major structural changes brought on by technological advances, global interconnectedness and shifting consumer behaviour.

Several methods of intervention have been explored and discussed with principal stakeholders and diverse organisations from the sector. Following a scoping and design stage, a specialist team is now working building partnerships to help deliver a range of interventions and dissemination models.

Findings and results will be available on this site soon.
