Measuring innovative characteristics in young people

Professor Elizabeth Chell is working with colleagues at Kingston University to develop a tool that will measure the capacity for innovation of young people. This will be an important feature of our work on nurturing future innovators as it will help us to understand what interventions are most effective and why.

Pilot versions of the tool are being tested with groups of 15 to 19-year-olds and their teachers.  If it works, the tool will then be made available more widely.

The research project will identify the characteristics that young people need in order to originate and implement ideas and will show how these qualities can be measured. The research will explore how features of school, social and home life affect an individual’s capacity for innovation. The researchers will also compare the influence of different types of secondary schools in different contexts, such as inner city and rural environments.

We are expecting the research project to finish in autumn 2008. If you would like to know more about this research, please contact us at futureinnovators@nesta.org.uk
