Luke Georghiou, Professor of Science & Technology Policy and Management at the University of Manchester and Chair of the European Research Area Expert Group, opened a discussion on the future of European research. Ian Pearson MP, Minister of State for Science and Innovation, responded.

He presented the findings from the European Research Area (ERA) Expert Group which lays down three challenges to Europe's research base and those who govern it. The main recommendations are to:

  • Engage the research system in Europe’s response to a series of grand challenges.
  • Encourage actors and institutions to work together in productive networks. 
  • Improve the quality of dialogue and links between supply and demand for research.

Ian Pearson welcomed the findings of the ERA Expert Group report and outlined a series of priorities for the UK.
